Website scroll video tools, compared

Free generators, screen recorders and browser extensions all make a website scroll video. Here is what each one actually lets you control, checked against their own pages.

Four kinds of tool make a website scroll video

  • URL renderers open the page on a server and build the video from it. Nothing to install, an even scroll, but public pages only. Website Scroll Video, Folge, HowdyGo, Tella and Link to Video all work this way, with very different amounts of control.
  • Screen recorders capture what your screen shows while you scroll. They reach any page and any interaction, and the scroll is as even as your hand. Screen Studio is the polished end of this; OBS and the recorders built into macOS and Windows are the free end.
  • Browser extensions automate the scroll inside your own tab and record it, so they can capture pages you are signed in to. See Chrome extensions.
  • Mockup and demo tools solve neighbouring problems: putting footage on a 3D device, or turning a product flow into a clickable tour. They pair with a scroll video rather than replace one.

If you are not sure which approach suits the job, the best ways to record a website and screen recording against a URL renderer go through it.

Others worth knowing about

  • URLtoVideo (urltovideo.com) is a free online tool with step-based scroll settings, pauses between steps and several output containers.
  • Alion Tech Studio’s scroll video generator captures a URL on its service, or takes an uploaded full-page screenshot, then composes the video in your own browser inside a browser or phone mockup.
  • Screenshot and capture APIs such as Urlbox offer scrolling video as an API call, for developers generating videos in bulk.
  • Rotato animates screenshots and footage on 3D devices on the Mac, and pairs well with a scroll video as its source.

What is the best tool to make a website scroll video?

For a public page, a URL renderer gives the evenest scroll with the least work. Website Scroll Video exposes the most settings: length, easing, frame rate, resolution up to 4K, pauses, hovers, pop-up removal and frames. Free generators such as Tella’s or HowdyGo’s are quicker if you need no control. For private pages or product demos with clicks, use a screen recorder.

Is there a free website scroll video generator?

Several. Tella, HowdyGo and Folge each offer one free, with few or no settings. Website Scroll Video gives new accounts free credits once, with no card, and never watermarks a video.

    How were these comparisons made?

Each one describes the other tool from its own website, on the date shown on its page, and links to the pages used. Where a page does not mention a feature, the table says “Not listed” rather than “No”. If something has changed, write to us and we will correct it.
