How to avoid jerky mouse wheels and uneven frame rates in scroll recordings

Why screen recordings of a scrolling website stutter, judder or drop frames, and the fix for each cause: the wheel, the recorder, the display and the page itself.

The short answer

Jerky scroll recordings have five usual causes: a notched mouse wheel moving the page in steps, a recorder writing a variable frame rate, a frame rate too low for constant motion, a display refreshing at a different rate from the recording, and a heavy page that cannot keep up. Scroll with a script instead of the wheel, record at a constant 60 fps, and preload the page. Or generate the video from the URL, where every frame is calculated and none can be dropped.

Find your cause first

Symptoms of a jerky scroll recording and their causes
What you see	Likely cause
The page moves in bursts with tiny pauses between them	A notched mouse wheel, smoothed by the browser one notch at a time
Speed swells and fades, never steady	A trackpad flick and its momentum
Smooth on screen, stuttery in the file or the editor	Variable frame rate recording
A regular, rhythmic shudder on fast scrolls	Too few frames per second, or a mismatch with the display rate
Freezes for a moment, then jumps ahead	The page or the machine dropping frames: lazy images, heavy scripts, an encoder struggling

1. The mouse wheel moves in steps

A standard mouse wheel clicks through notches, and each notch asks the page to move a fixed distance. Browsers smooth each step with a short animation, so a continuous turn of the wheel becomes a chain of small accelerate-and-stop movements. On screen your eye forgives it. In a video, played back on a large display, it reads as a stutter.

Best fix: do not use the wheel. Let a script scroll the page at a set speed; the auto-scroll guide has one to copy.
If you must scroll by hand: a free-spinning wheel or a trackpad held at a steady slow drag is better than a notched wheel, but no hand holds a speed for twenty seconds.

2. The recorder writes a variable frame rate

Many built-in recorders, including the macOS screenshot toolbar and QuickTime, write a frame only when something on screen changes. That saves space, but the gaps between frames vary, and video editors and some players handle that badly: frames get duplicated or dropped to fit a fixed timeline, and the scroll judders.

Record with a tool that writes a constant frame rate, such as OBS Studio, set to 60 fps.
If you already have a variable frame rate file, convert it to a constant rate before editing. HandBrake’s “Constant Framerate” option does it.

3. Too few frames for constant motion

A scroll moves every pixel on every frame. At 30 fps each frame jumps twice as far as at 60, and on text-heavy pages the eye sees the jumps. 24 fps is film’s rate and suits film; for a page scrolling at any speed it looks the least smooth of the three.

Record and export at 60 fps when the motion is the point. Drop to 30 only for smaller files, and slow the scroll down if you do. GIFs are capped low by most tools, so keep GIF scrolls short and gentle.

4. The display and the recording disagree

If your display refreshes at 120 or 144 Hz and you record at 60 fps, the recorder keeps every second or so frame, and on a variable refresh display not even evenly. Setting the display to 60 Hz while recording gives the recorder a one-to-one match. On a Mac with ProMotion, that setting is under Displays, Refresh Rate.

5. The page cannot keep up

Lazy-loaded images decode the moment they scroll into view, and that work steals frames. Scroll to the bottom and back before recording so everything is loaded.
Pages with heavy scroll-linked scripts, video backgrounds or WebGL effects push the machine hard. Close other apps and browser tabs.
Recording and encoding at the same time competes with the page for the CPU. Use the recorder’s hardware encoder if it has one.

The fix that removes all five

Every cause above comes from capturing motion in real time on a real screen. A renderer does neither. Website Scroll Video reads the page once, waits for images and fonts, then calculates where the page should be on each frame and draws it. There is no wheel to step, no display rate to match and no deadline for a frame to miss, so the output holds a locked 24, 30 or 60 fps however long or heavy the page is.

Contact

Why does my screen recording of scrolling look choppy?

Usually because a mouse wheel moves the page in notches, or the recorder writes a variable frame rate. Scroll with a script and record at a constant 60 fps, or generate the video from the URL instead of recording it.

Is 30 fps enough for a website scroll video?

It works for slow scrolls and small files. For anything faster, 60 fps is noticeably smoother, because each frame moves the page half as far.

How do I fix a variable frame rate recording?

Re-encode it to a constant frame rate before editing, for example with HandBrake’s Constant Framerate setting, or re-record with a tool such as OBS that writes a constant rate.
