Turn websites into scrollable videos for social media

The right shape, length and format for a website scroll video on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X and YouTube, and how to make each cut from one link.

The short answer

Use 9:16 for Reels, TikTok, Shorts and stories, 4:5 for Instagram and LinkedIn feed posts, 1:1 when you are not sure where it will end up, and 16:9 for YouTube and X. Read the page at phone width for the vertical cuts so the site shows its real mobile layout, keep it to 8 to 15 seconds, pause on the one section that matters, and export an MP4.

The right shape for each platform

Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts9:16Phone width8 to 15 seconds
Instagram and Facebook stories9:16Phone widthUnder 15 seconds

X (Twitter), Threads16:9 or 1:1Desktop width8 to 20 seconds

4:5 is the tallest shape most feeds show without cropping, so it takes the most room on a phone screen. 1:1 is the safe square that every platform displays whole. Each platform publishes its own limits on length and file size, and they change, so check them before a long or 4K export.

Show the mobile site, or the desktop one?

A vertical video wants a vertical page. If you squeeze a desktop layout into 9:16, either the text becomes unreadable or most of the page is cut off at the sides. Reading the page at phone width instead makes the site serve the layout it actually shows on a phone, which fills a vertical frame naturally. In Website Scroll Video the portrait shapes come with the Tablet and Mobile devices for exactly this reason.

To show the desktop design in a feed, use 1:1 or 16:9 at desktop width with some padding and a background around the browser window. It reads as a framed product shot rather than a cramped page. More on phone captures in recording the mobile version of a website.

What makes a scroll video work in a feed

  • Move in the first second. A held frame is a good thumbnail and a bad opener. Keep the start hold under a second, or skip it.
  • One pause, on the point. The hero or the one feature you are announcing, held for a second or two. More than two pauses and a short video stops feeling like a scroll.
  • Faster than a showcase. About a second per screen of page. People will replay a short loop; they will not wait for a long one.
  • A loop with no seam. Down and Back returns to the top along the same curve, so platforms that loop the video show no jump.
  • Clear of the app’s buttons. The bottom and right edges of a vertical video sit under captions, likes and share buttons. A little padding around the page keeps the important parts out from under them.

Format and sound

  • MP4 (H.264) for every social platform. It is what they all accept and re-encode best.
  • 1080p is plenty for a phone screen. Platforms compress uploads, and 4K mostly costs upload time.
  • 60 fps keeps text legible while it moves. Platforms that cap at 30 will convert it.
  • No soundtrack. The export is silent. Add music in the app when you post, where the platform’s licensed library is.

What aspect ratio is best for a website video on Instagram?

9:16 for Reels and stories, 4:5 for a feed post. Read the page at phone width for both, so the site shows its mobile layout instead of a shrunken desktop one.

How long should a website video be for TikTok or Reels?

Eight to fifteen seconds for a scroll through one page. Short loops get replayed; long scrolls get skipped.

Can I add music to a website scroll video?

The exported file is silent. Add a track when you post, in the platform’s own editor, or in any video editor before uploading.
