How to remove cookie banners and pop-ups from a website recording

Keep consent banners, chat bubbles and newsletter modals out of a website video: dismiss them, hide them with CSS, block them with filter lists, or use a capture tool that removes them first.

The short answer

Remove them before you capture, not after: cropping or blurring a banner in an editor never looks clean. When recording yourself, dismiss the banner, hide anything left with a line of CSS in DevTools, or block cookie notices with a filter list. When rendering from a URL, use a tool that clears consent banners, chat launchers and modals automatically, and lets you hide any element it misses by CSS selector.

Why it has to happen before the capture

A consent bar pinned to the bottom of the window is in every single frame of a scroll video. Cropping it out costs you a slice of the page in every frame too, and blurring it leaves a smudge that moves nowhere while everything else scrolls. A chat bubble in the corner is the same story. The only clean version is one where they were never there.

When you record the screen yourself

  • Dismiss or accept the banner, close the newsletter modal and minimise the chat widget, then reload and check they stay gone. Many come back on every page load in a fresh private window.
  • Block them. uBlock Origin ships optional cookie-notice filter lists (in its settings, under Filter lists, Annoyances). Turn them on in the browser profile you record with.
  • Hide what is left with CSS. In DevTools, right-click the element, choose Inspect, and either delete the node or add a rule to hide it.
A DevTools rule to hide common leftovers
/* Paste into a new style rule in the Elements panel. Adjust the selectors
   to whatever the page actually uses. */
#onetrust-banner-sdk,
.cookie-banner,
[aria-label*="cookie" i],
.intercom-lightweight-app { display: none !important; }

html, body { overflow: auto !important; }

The last line matters more than it looks. Many modals lock the page scroll while they are open, and hiding the modal without releasing the lock leaves a page you cannot scroll.

When you render from the URL

In Website Scroll Video this is on by default, as Dismiss Cookie Banners and Popups. Before anything is captured, the page is cleaned:

  • The major consent platforms are recognised by name and removed.
  • Unknown ones are caught by a heuristic that looks for pinned, high-stacked elements with consent wording.
  • Chat launchers, newsletter modals and leftover dark backdrops are removed too.
  • The scroll lock those modals leave behind is released, so the page scrolls all the way down.

Two more settings sit beside it. Block Trackers and Ads keeps tracking and advertising requests from loading, which also keeps ad slots and the widgets they bring out of the frame. Hide elements takes CSS selectors, one per line, for anything site-specific the automatic pass leaves, such as a promo bar or a sticky “Book a demo” button.

Sticky headers are a different case

A sticky navigation bar is part of the design, not clutter, and usually belongs in the video. Renderers that pan a single tall screenshot have to handle it specially, or it appears once at the top and then scrolls away. Website Scroll Video lays sticky headers back on top of each frame, pinned the way a visitor sees them. If you would rather it was not there at all, add its selector to Hide elements.

    Contact
    How do I hide a cookie banner when screen recording a website?

    Dismiss it and reload to check it stays dismissed, or hide it with a CSS rule in DevTools, or enable a cookie-notice filter list in an ad blocker. Then release any scroll lock it left behind.

    Will a cookie banner show up in my Website Scroll Video export?

    No. Known consent platforms are recognised by name and unknown ones by a heuristic that looks for pinned, high-stacked elements with consent wording, and they are removed before anything is captured. Chat launchers and newsletter modals go with them.

    What if a pop-up still appears in my video?

    Add its CSS selector under Hide elements in the video settings and preview again. Previews are free, so you can check before exporting.
